Any person who wishes to inspect and test electrical equipment that is supplied via a flexible cable, and specified built-in appliances, for safety and suitability. This testing is often required to be carried out in various environments such as: offices, shops, schools, factories, charities and rented accommodation etc. It is also a requirement for many Health and Safety policies and insurance companies.

All successful delegates will receive a Portable Appliance Testing EAL Level 3 4340 qualification.

Who is it for?

Any person who wishes to inspect and test electrical equipment that is supplied via a flexible cable, and specified built-in appliances, for safety and suitability.

This qualification is suitable for an electrical contractor wishing to offer another service, electricians seeking to enhance their skills and increase employment opportunities or for general maintenance staff.

What the course covers
  • The legal requirements of inspection and testing of electrical equipment in accordance with the Electricity At Work Regulations 1989 and HSE guidance whilst referring to the IET code of practice
  • The theoretical requirements, as well as how to practically carry out the inspection and test
  • Record keeping
  • Relevant health and safety

This is a combined management and operatives course with a mixture of theory and practical sessions. Delegates may bring their own test equipment (if suitable) or use one of our testers.

Entry Requirements

All applicants must have a good level of written and spoken English, basic mathematic skills and the practical ability to use simple tools to remove equipment covers. Minimum age 18 or undertaking a relevant approved apprenticeship.

You will need to obtain a copy of the IET In service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment 4th edition ISBN number 978-1-84919-626-0.

Examination and Assessment

The course is examined externally with an EAL online open book exam and internally by practical assessment. EAL certificate on successful completion, which is recognised by the JIB/ECS and the preferred qualification of the NICEIC and ELECSA.

This course is taught and examined in English.
